World Wetlands Day

On February 2nd each year, the world turns its attention to an often overlooked yet vital ecosystem for Earth’s life—wetlands. Known as World Wetlands Day, this day serves not only to mark a significant environmental milestone but also to enhance global awareness of the importance of wetlands and to encourage joint efforts in their conservation.

More than half a century ago on February 2nd, 1971, representatives from 18 forward-thinking nations gathered in Ramsar—a scenic town along Iran’s Caspian Sea coast. There they signed what is now known as the Ramsar Convention (Convention on Wetlands of International Importance especially as Waterfowl Habitat). This groundbreaking treaty marked the first time wetlands were recognized within an international cooperative framework—not just as waterfowl habitats but also for their rich biodiversity and crucial ecological services closely tied to human well-being. Achieving such international consensus back then was challenging but symbolized humanity’s growing awareness of our interconnected ecosystems and shared responsibility.

To honor this milestone and spread awareness about wetlands’ significance widely, the Ramsar Convention’s Standing Committee decided during its 19th meeting in 1996 that starting from 1997 onwards February 2nd would be celebrated annually as World Wetlands Day. Since then each year on this date various organizations including wetland management bodies environmental groups educational institutions alongside countless individuals passionate about wetlands organize events advocating protection these invaluable “Earth’s kidneys.”
