World Wildlife Day

Every year on March 3rd, people around the globe who care deeply about our planet have a special concern in their hearts for those voiceless yet incredibly vital creatures among us. Yes, this day is known as World Wildlife Day—a date with significant meaning behind it.

On March 3rd back in 1973, representatives from numerous countries convened to sign an essential agreement called the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES). This agreement acted as an international safety net for species threatened by trade. Subsequently, on December 20th, 2013, the United Nations General Assembly declared March 3rd as World Wildlife Day each year. This day not only commemorates the signing of CITES but also encourages global reflection on how crucial these “wild” friends are to us!

Why dedicate a special day for this? Simply put—it’s about raising awareness. It’s crucial for everyone to recognize that beyond humans exist numerous fascinating wild animals and plants. They’re not just textbook images or documentary stars; they’re integral parts of our planet—the unsung heroes maintaining Earth’s health.

Consider this:

They’re key components of biodiversity: Various species of animals and plants add unique colors to Earth’s canvas; losing any would dull its vibrancy significantly. Each species holds intrinsic value within an interconnected ecosystem.
They provide invaluable free services: Bees pollinate plants enabling fruit production; forests purify air & water; wetlands act like sponges preventing floods; coral reefs protect coastlines… These “ecosystem services” offered by nature through wildlife hold immeasurable worth.
They inspire & support humanity: Countless myths & legends stem from observing wildlife; art & medical discoveries often draw upon nature’s wisdom too! Wildlife brings joy & curiosity while supporting livelihoods dependent upon healthy ecosystems.
Yet today’s challenges facing wildlife are unprecedented—poaching; illegal trade; habitat destruction; climate change & pollution threaten many species’ survival at alarming rates—a tragedy impacting humanity profoundly too.

Thus World Wildlife Day serves as both reminder & call-to-action globally with activities including:

Lectures spotlighting fascinating species
Nature outings celebrating wilderness
Exhibitions showcasing wildlife’s beauty via photos/videos
Discussions combating illegal trade/protecting endangered species
Above all—emphasizing that safeguarding wildlife secures our future too!
The apt theme for 2021 was “Forests & Livelihoods: Sustaining People & Planet”—our ultimate goal indeed! It’s not about caging wildlife or overtaking their habitats but fostering coexistence where human progress doesn’t compromise other life forms’ spaces/rights—harmoniously sharing this blue planet together! Nationwide theme promotions aimed precisely at integrating this ethos into daily lives beyond mere academic concepts.

Ultimately World Wildlife Day urges us all—to pause; admire birds overhead; notice grass underfoot; contemplate distant forest/ocean dwellers alike—they’re fellow Earth citizens! Protecting them safeguards our shared home enabling life & nature’s beauty continuity! So each March 3rd remember these wild companions deserve your attention & affection too!
