Following that comes White Day on March 14th—a time when those who received return gifts are likely still basking in joy while others may feel slightly disappointed… Exactly one month later on April 14th every year in certain parts of the world (mainly South Korea with influence spreading elsewhere), there’s a unique holiday dedicated to singles known as Black Day!

The name itself suggests it’s quite different from the previous two holidays. Indeed! While Valentine’s Day and White Day are for couples flaunting their love and romance, Black Day serves as a special “comfort day” or “celebration day” for those who received nothing on February 14th or March 14th or simply wish to celebrate their single status! It’s designed for “single friends” (or what we jokingly refer to as “noble singles”).

How do people celebrate this holiday? The customs are quite vivid! On this day, it’s customary for everyone to dress entirely in black from head to toe—imagine wearing black clothes, pants, shoes—even donning a black hat—to visually declare your single status (or simply because dressing like this feels cool and unique!).

The most important ritual on this day is eating Jajangmyeon—a Korean noodle dish mixed with thick black soybean paste. You can enjoy a big bowl alone relishing your freedom or invite other single friends along. Sitting together in a noodle shop with bowls of Jajangmyeon creates an atmosphere where you’re not alone but rather partaking in collective camaraderie among singles. The name Black Day originates from eating these black noodles.

Moreover—even drinking follows some “black philosophy.” According to tradition—even coffee should be consumed without creamer or sugar—just pure black coffee—to savor its bitter original taste symbolizing how “single life may sometimes be bitter but can still be faced calmly with appreciation for its unique flavor.”

Why have such a holiday? Simply put—it provides singles with belongingness & ritualistic significance amidst couple-centric celebrations allowing them opportunities for mutual support & humor-filled gatherings sharing experiences realizing they aren’t alone celebrating thus using humor dissolving feelings left out while celebrating independence & freedom.

Every April 14th hence becomes known as Black Day—a “comfort day” found by singles themselves—a “huddling together celebration”—or simply “single freedom day!” Using dark humor making singleness visible & celebratable devoid profound historical legends yet deeply rooted modern cultural product closely relating young people’s lives/emotions.

Next April 14th if still single why not wear black clothes too enjoying bowl Jajangmyeon feeling special holiday atmosphere telling through taste/color: Hey—you aren’t alone!
